There is sailing in Wisconsin and then there is Sailing in Wisconsin... Of course you can sail many different kinds of boats on most lakes, but southeast Wisconsin is unique because there are 13 Lakes in this part of the state that Race sailboats competitively. These lakes are members of the nationally-renowned association, ILYA. This stands for Inland Lake Yachting Association. It's a member organization that is focused on competitive sailing on the Inland Lakes in the United states. Most of these "sailing lakes" are in the Upper Midwest and southeastern Wisconsin is blessed to have a large grouping of these clubs (13). This association maintains the organization needed to have Interlake competitions for sailing, serving as a central source for Administration, Rules, Judging, Regatta Scheduling and much more. So when you're deciding what lake to purchase a property on a lake, it really is critical that you know if it's a sailing lake or not a sailing Lake.

The list above of 13 lakes in southeastern Wisconsin have robust fleets and individual clubs on each Lake. Some of our country's best Olympic sailors have come from this part of the country. Or sailing season is short from the middle of May through early September. These individual clubs compete amongst themselves with multiple organized races weekly with periodic Regattas (tournaments including other lakes) scattered throughout the summer months. There are sailboat regattas for Kids, adults and seniors. In my opinion it's a great example of Americana, right here in Wisconsin. At the end of the summer the best of the best come to one Lake that rotates annually for the end of the year inland championship known as "the Inland".  That will be on Lake Geneva next year.

There are different kinds (classes) of sailboats in the ILYA. Everything from an optimist which is a beginner sailboat designed for kids 5 years old through 9 or 10 years old. X boats which are for kids through 18 years old, MCs which are one sailed boats for people of all ages, C boats which are 20 foot one sailed boats for experienced sailors, E Boats holding 4 regular crew and A Boats which have 5 crew per boat.
